Her research is specific: chronic stress doesn't just slow cognition the way a hard day makes everything harder. It causes measurable structural and functional impairment of the prefrontal cortex, the region responsible for working memory, decision-making, and executive function. Stress hormones bind to prefrontal cortex receptors and physically weaken the synaptic connections that support complex, strategic thought.
A comprehensive meta-analysis by Dr. Greg Shields and colleagues at the University of California, Davis, which reviewed the effects of acute stress across multiple studies on core executive functions, confirmed the pattern: cortisol spikes measurably impair working memory and cognitive flexibility. These are not peripheral cognitive functions. They are the exact capacities that high-level leadership requires most.
Every leader operating under continuous internal pressure is leading with a cognitively compromised prefrontal cortex. This is not a mindset observation. It is a neuroscience finding.
Why high-performing leaders are particularly exposed
The counterintuitive truth is that the leaders most affected by this are not struggling leaders. They are the high-performing ones: the people who have been sustaining demanding cognitive and emotional output for years, who have built careers on their capacity to function under pressure, and who have therefore been running the neurological cost of that performance for longer than most.
There is a specific irony here that I lived firsthand.
